Is it just me or do you do this too?
I used to always look at people and think, "wow! I wish I could be like that"
Not at prettier, skinnier, cleverer people, mind you.
But at people that could travel with just one piece of luggage. I'd stand behind them in the checking in queue at the airport and literally be jealous that they could go on a holiday... to a foreign place....not their home.... with so little!
You might not know this about me but I'm (naturally) a very heavy traveller - I like to be prepared for every eventuality!
When I'd go home from university and my dad collected me, he'd joke and say things like, "only 3 bags?" yet it wasn't really a joke because that was me!
But now I am FINALLY that person.
Check this out!
A mere 9,8kg of luggage taken all the way to Dublin, Ireland on our recent holiday. No hand luggage except for my handbag.
It did help that I'm pregnant and have 3 pairs of maternity pants and only so many tops but now that I've tasted the freedom of easy travel, I'm hooked!
So what kind of person are you? Do you travel light or were you like the old me?

I am FINALLY that person I've always wanted to be

I am the old you. I take 3 bag's with me for a 2 night stay in Vegas. Everyone else takes 1 and laughs at me.
Oh I am the person who takes a toothbrush for the weekend and my husband takes the house and I mean everything...
For our honeymoon I was so focussed on the wedding that I never thought to pack a thing - NOTHING!!! My man had two huge bags, but he had specially left space in the back of the car for mine... His eyes only mildly popped out of his head when I said I didn't have any!!! Thank goodness for hotels with complimentary toothbrushes...
I always pack half of what I think I will need. Especially because my husband packs three times what he actually needs.
I have had trips where I didnt have everything I needed, and I just popped into a local store and picked up something that would do until I got home.
If I had my way, I would travel with no luggage, buy everything at the destination, and travel home with no luggage. But I cant afford that... I think it is just the idealist in me talking.
I used to travel light and just carry extra money so I could buy whatever I might need. Back when I was single, had few expenses, and a great-paying job. But now with loads of kids I carry quite a bit with me. A few years ago we went away for the weekend and only once we got to our destination did I realize that I hadn't packed clothes for my hubby. He still teases me about that.
jamiely, good to know my old self has a friend!
se7en, now see that would TOTALLY stress me out :)
Anne, that truly does sound heavenly ...but expensive :)
Lil old mom, that's what I'm dreading - travelling with kids!
Wait a minute! Did I hear you right? Are you expecting a little one???? congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!
I am somewhere in between. I think it depends on where we are going.
Marcia, yes, I'm expecting TWO little ones in August :)
Marci, you raise a good point. I'm also better the further I travel!
I used to be like that, but I am a GO LIGHT now all the way, LOL.
Congrats again on being pregnant and check this out...
I am going to be a first time Granny, WOO HOO. I am so excited!!Giveaway on my blog at www.militarymomz.blogspot.com. Post a comment on the boy name and girl name you like best out of the ones listed.
I use to be a heavy traveler as well. But as I've gotten older, I don't want to drag as much around with me. So, I purchased a smaller bag, and use it.
The bigger bags are so yesterday......
Ciao
LOL. What a fun post. I can SO relate! I am a heavy packer too but I always feel SO virtuous when I manage to go somewhere with only one small bag.
Have fun!
Glenda you are right! I suppose I was younger and more full of energy then too
Jo-Lynn, it must be because we're "bag ladies" LOL
Military Mom, I saw that! Congrats to you too.
I know this is a few weeks late but I was in Ireland when you posted this! Isn't that a fun coincidence!! The flight we needed to take from Dublin to the Isle of Man required that our checked bag didn't weigh more than 33 pounds. So our goal for the whole trip was to pack one bag, under 33 pounds (plus a max of 10 pounds carry-on.) I was so worried!! I joked that I take 33 pounds just going to the grocery store!
I test packed a dozen times, changed bags to a lighter suitcase, got smaller travel bottles of shampoo, etc. I ended up with 24 pounds plus 5 pounds in my carry on. We had to do laundry once (which was planned) and I couldn't have been happier NOT lugging around all those excess bags.
How fun that you were also in Ireland! It's beautiful, isn't it?
I'm not sure if you travelled on RyanAir but those people are STRICT with their luggage allowances - 15 kg and not a bit more. That's why I started throwing clothes away last year and also partly why I was so strict with myself this year.
